Fauna in the South West

Kookaburra

Keep an eye and ear out for a kookaburra whilst on a dunsborough holiday

BIRDS

The Vasse-Wonnerup Wetlands are a birdwatchers paradise. More than 80 species, many of them rare have been sighted here. My personal favourite is the kookaburra – a beautiful bird that is frequently seen and heard around Dunsborough.

KANGAROOS

All overseas visitors want to see Kangaroos. There are plenty  to be seen around Dunsborough. There are many big grey kangaroos in the Biddle Rd are near Yallingup, you can see hundreds in a paddock opposite Petra Olive Oil, Sheoak Drive.  Walk near the golf course in Old Dunsborough and see them happily hopping around or resting on the fairways. The Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park is also home to kangaroos.

SEALS.

A colony of seals live near the Cape Naturalist Lighthouse.

WHALES.

During whale season from September to December Geographe Bay is one of the best places in Australia for spotting whales.

Take a 3.7 k walk along the coastal path from Dunsborough to Meelup Beach, through the Meelup Reserve and see the migrating whales, both old and  young frolicking off the coast. You may be lucky enough to hear the whale song and see them tail slapping the water. A truly wonderful sight . The walk is very beautiful in Spring with many wildflowers along the path. There are several signed whale viewing areas as well as the natural rocky outcrops. Meelup Beach is one of the prettiest beaches, crystal clear blue water and white sand. It has grassed areas and shady trees and BBQ’s making it a very popular spot for a family day out. Meelup Beach is widely photographed and very beautiful.

Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse is a fabulous whale watching place. There is a board walk and viewing platforms which make whale spotting easy.  Go for a walk around the lighthouse, enjoy the views and experience the moonscape area.

Whale watch cruises operate out of Dunsborough. You can get up close to the whales.

DOLPHINS

Dolphins  are regularly spotted in Geographe Bay and the many surf breaks in the South West of Western Australia.
